The citizens of Finland already enjoy amazing public health care, public day care, and public education at all levels. But in a recent development, Finland has become the first country to guarantee broadband access to all citizens! The plan is for all Finns to have a one-megabit megabit connection by this July and a 100mbs connection by 2015! Yes, that is huge.

With the United States taking big steps in net neutrality, it seems that many countries in the world are moving closer to a future with increased freedom of access to information. A very exciting time indeed.

The Communications Committee approved the go ahead of the plan to create a national free WI FI network. This would be supported by advertisements and on personal upgrades people would contract a subscription for.

It was heavily argued by several independent service providers, such as T Mobile, Verizon and AT&T, due to the potential to affect their sales. They have been reassured that it will not, but there is still resistance.

The next step for the plan is to auction for airspace, which will decide what company is the responsible party. The FCC will start this as early as 2009, but already there are companies intensely working to gain the contract. The lead company in M2Z networks who are propositioning a “free, fast, family-friendly wireless broadband internet connectivity.”

They are stating there will be filters to stop children and teenagers from clicking questionable sites or looking at inappropriate pages. There is doubt and skepticism as to the ability to create a system teens will not hack and get past.

In less than two weeks, the streets of downtown Asheville will once again be flooded with thousands of locals and tourists for the annual street festival, Bele Chere. Personally, I’ll be doing my best to avoid the mayhem, but for those that choose to partake in the festivities this means music, crafts, sunburns, funnel cakes, and face painting galor!

Musical acts in the past have varied from De La Soul (canceled) to Foghat….yes, Foghat! This year’s line up inlcudes names like Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Rusted Root, and the Karl Denson Trio. Where these shows always used to be free to the public, Asheville Parks & Rec have felt the need to charge for such headliners in recent years.
